Description

The Laya is a round side table in solid mango wood, 55cm across and 50cm high, which makes the top wider than the table is tall. The top is a plain disc with a square edge, built up from jointed boards with the grain, the knots and the joins all left showing. Under it sits a single carved pedestal: a narrow neck, three tight rings, a full rounded belly, then rings again before it spreads onto a wide stepped foot. The finish is raw wood rather than a stain.

It stands 50cm high with a 55cm top, a large surface for a side table, so a lamp, a tray and a stack of books will sit on it at once rather than one at a time. The pedestal takes everything down one central column, so there are no legs at the corners and a sofa or an armchair can be pushed right up against it. The foot is a broad stepped disc rather than three or four feet, which keeps 12.7kg of table steady but needs a clear circle of floor around the base. It goes beside a sofa, an armchair or a bed.

The table is solid mango wood right through, and the carving is hand work in a traditional Indian woodworking craft. Raw mango is pale and strongly figured: this pedestal carries dark knots and fine cracks running with the grain, and the top shows the joins between the boards it is built from. No two tables take the same pattern. The Laya range runs from this side table up through a coffee table to a small and a large round table, all in mango wood with the same natural finish.

Frequently Asked

How big is the top?

55cm across, and the table stands 50cm from the floor.

Does it need assembling?

Yes. The instruction manual is linked under Downloads above.

What is it made of?

Solid mango wood throughout, carved by hand and left raw rather than stained.

Why are there cracks and knots in the wood?

The timber is solid and the finish is raw, so the grain, the knots and the movement of the wood all show on the surface. Every table is marked differently.

How do I look after it?

Wipe the surface with a soft dry cloth, working along the grain. Mild soap and water will shift a mark, but keep water to a minimum and dry it at once. Use coasters and mats, deal with spills straight away, and keep the table out of strong direct sunlight and away from extremes of heat and humidity. Harsh chemicals and abrasives will damage the finish, and rubber or plastic left sitting on the surface can react with it.
