Description
This is a round side plate in red stoneware, 20cm across and 2cm tall, finished in a solid coloured glaze with a glossy shine. Its character comes from the relief: fluted ribs fan out from a smooth centre towards a scalloped rim, so the edge catches the light whenever the plate is turned. At 20cm it is a true side plate size, smaller than a dinner plate and larger than a saucer, and at 0.35KG it is light enough to pass round the table without effort.
Use it for bread and butter beside a dinner plate, a slice of cake at afternoon tea, toast at breakfast or a starter when friends come for supper. The broad, flat centre gives plenty of room for a sandwich or a few biscuits, while the raised fluting frames whatever sits in the middle. The red suits a breakfast table all year and comes into its own at Christmas, whether laid on plain linen or a bare wooden table. Kept by the kettle, it is just as handy for a single pastry at a desk.
Stoneware is fired hard and dense, which makes it a sturdy material for everyday use, and the solid coloured glaze carries the red evenly across the whole surface rather than as a printed pattern. Care is simple: the plate goes in the dishwasher, it can be warmed in the microwave and it can go in the oven, so a few rolls or mince pies can be heated through on it before they reach the table. For a relaxed setting, lay it to the left of a larger plate with a fork and a folded napkin, or stand it upright on an open kitchen shelf, where the scalloped rim shows at its best. The styling props shown are not included.
