Description

A ceramic planter 30cm high and 27cm across, close to a cylinder but drawn in a little towards the foot. The body is combed with fine vertical ribbing from just under the shoulder down to the base, and above that the top is left smooth and slopes inwards to a mouth set back from the outer edge. The glaze is reactive, so it breaks pale and sandy over the ridges and runs darker terracotta in the grooves between them.

It is made for outside as well as in. There are drainage holes in the base and a bung to plug them with, so the same planter goes out on a terrace with the holes open and onto a floor indoors with the bung in. At 30cm high and 27cm across it holds a shrub, a grass or a good-sized lavender rather than a single small herb.

The planter is ceramic, made in small batches in Portugal by methods the country has worked in for centuries. A smaller size is made, and both sizes are made in a cream as well as this terracotta. Because the glaze is reactive the tone shifts from one planter to the next, so no two are quite the same.
