Kossi Large Glass Storage Jar - Clear

The larger Kossi jar: a clear glass cylinder 22cm tall and 12.5cm across, closed with a disc of solid mango wood and carrying a wooden spoon on the outside. The glass is thick at the base and thins up the wall, with small bubbles caught through it. A loop of clear glass is worked onto the side, and the spoon handle passes through it so the bowl of the spoon rests up near the neck. The lid drops into the mouth and sits level with the rim.

The extra height over the 16.5cm Kossi is what makes this the jar for flour, sugar, rice or pasta rather than for spices. A line of Kossi jars stands along a kitchen worktop, the taller ones set behind. Clear glass shows the level from across a room, so a row of them on an open shelf reads at a glance. It is for dry food only.

The jar and the loop are glass; the lid and the spoon are mango wood. The trees are grown for fruit first and felled for timber only once they have stopped bearing, which is what puts the wood into circulation and lets the growers plant again. Every lid is cut from solid wood, so the grain and the depth of colour vary between one jar and the next. Kossi also comes at 16.5cm tall and 11cm across.
