Description

The Kiyoma is a low storage bench with a mango wood top on a square section iron frame. The top is one plank running the full 119.5cm, its natural edge left irregular along the front and overhanging the frame slightly at each end. Two open shelves of iron wire sit below it, each a shallow tray of diagonal struts with a low lip along the sides. The frame is dark iron throughout and the bench stands 52cm high and 29cm deep.

At 52cm the top sits a little above ordinary seat height, which is the height for sitting down to pull boots on and getting up again. The two wire shelves run the whole length of the frame and take shoes in pairs, or boxes and baskets. At 29cm deep the bench will stand against a hallway wall without narrowing the passage, and it takes shoes below and a bag on the top.

The top is mango wood and the frame and shelves are iron, soldered rather than bolted. Mango is grown first for its fruit and felled only once the trees have stopped bearing, which is what makes the timber available at all. Each top is cut from a single board, so the grain and the line of the front edge differ from one bench to the next. A taller Kiyoma unit is made in the same iron and wood.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

119.5cm long, 52cm high and 29cm deep.

Can it be sat on?

Yes. The top is a solid mango wood plank on an iron frame and it stands 52cm from the floor.

What are the shelves for?

Two open wire shelves run the length of the frame below the top, sized for shoes, boxes or baskets.

How much does it weigh?

12.06kg.

How do I look after it?

Blot any spillage straight away with a dry cloth and keep chemical cleaners off the wood. An edible oil such as olive or walnut rubbed into the surface will feed and protect it, though it will darken the tone. The colour of the wood will shift over time.
