Description

A clear glass storage jar 19cm tall and 13cm across, holding 520ml, closed with a solid block of mango wood. The glass wall is dimpled all over, hammered into shallow irregular facets that break up the light and blur whatever sits behind the jar, and the base is thicker and smoother with a faint green in it. The lid is a squared block with rounded corners that tapers slightly as it rises, and a long rounded slot is cut through the top of it for a handle. It drops into the neck and carries a seal.

520ml is a pantry jar rather than a worktop canister: enough for a bag of lentils, a week of coffee beans or a run of loose tea. On a kitchen shelf the pattern in the glass shows where the jar is empty and disappears where it is full. The cut out slot means the lid lifts with one finger. The jar is for dry food only.

The jar is glass and the lid is mango wood, which comes from trees grown for fruit and felled only once they stop bearing. The lid has an airtight seal in it. Kitto also comes in a larger size, 25cm tall and holding 1,850ml.
