Description

A woven panel of jute and cotton set into a flat mango wood frame, 120cm by 80cm and 4cm deep. The ground is worked in narrow bands of undyed jute broken by fine darker lines, and two shapes are woven into it in dark blue: a faceted six sided block towards one end, and towards the other a larger angular form split between a solid dark field and a lighter hatched block. The weave stands proud of the frame, so the surface carries a shallow relief rather than a printed image.

It hangs either way up. It hangs portrait on its own or landscape above a three seat sofa, where it runs almost the full width of the seat back. At 4cm deep it sits close to the wall, and at 7.6kg it wants a fixing that takes that weight.

The textile is jute and cotton, handwoven on a traditional loom, and the frame is mango wood. The yarns are pot dyed and then washed back to a softer tone, and the woven pattern follows a hand drawn template, so the placing of the shapes and the density of the weave shift a little from one panel to the next. No two are the same.
