Description

A square brass picture frame, 36 x 36cm and 1cm deep, glazed on both sides with no backing board, so whatever goes in it is seen against the wall behind. A fine brass chain runs across the top on two rings to hang it by. The metal is a narrow flat band around the edge of the glass, finished antique so the tone is warm and uneven rather than bright.

It hangs from the chain rather than standing on a ledge, and at 36cm square it takes a photograph, a print, a pressed leaf or a page of a letter with room to spare around it. Because both sides are glass, the artwork can be smaller than the frame and sit in the middle of it rather than being cropped to fit. They hang in a row along a wall, with the wall reading straight through the margins.

The frame is brass and the glazing is glass. The metal is soldered around the glass with traditional tools, which leaves weld marks on the joins of every frame. The finish is rustic rather than even, and at 1.96kg the fixing it hangs from has to take the weight.
