Description

The Kiko is a brass edged photo frame that takes a 4 x 6 inch portrait picture, 16cm tall, 10cm wide and only 1cm deep. It is glazed front and back, with the brass soldered around the two panes by hand, and the solder sits proud on the joins where the metal meets. Two small brass rings are fixed to the top corners and a printed fabric tie is knotted through them.

Because both faces are glass, whatever goes in is seen from either side and the wall shows through the margin around it. That suits a pressed leaf, a postcard, a ticket or a drawing as readily as a photograph. At 16 by 10cm it is one of the smaller Kiko frames, and the range carries 5 x 7 and 8 x 10 inch as well, each in portrait and in landscape, which is what lets a group of them go up at mixed sizes and mixed orientations. The tie is knotted into a triangle and hangs over a single hook.

The frame is brass and the panes are glass. The metal is soldered around the glass with traditional tools, and the weld marks on the joins come out of that handmade process rather than being tidied away. Each tie is cut from a recycled sari and is one of a kind, so no two are alike.
