Description

The Khara rabbit is a standing decoration carved from mango wood, 11cm tall and 7cm across. The shape is pared right back to one rounded body, a smaller round head sitting straight on top of it, and two long flat ears that rise from the head and taper to a point. It is carved without a face or feet, so the whole thing reads as a silhouette. The wood is worked smooth, and the grain runs across the body in bands that darken where the growth rings cross the curve.

At 11cm tall this is a piece for a table rather than for a shelf read from across a room. It sits among the plates on a spring table, on a mantelpiece, or on a windowsill where the light comes across the grain at an angle. The underside of the body is cut flat, so it stands on its own on a level surface with nothing to prop it. The large Khara rabbit is 16.5cm tall, so the two stand together at different heights.

The wood is mango, cut and shaped by hand, so the grain and the depth of the tone differ from one rabbit to the next. On a piece this size the grain reads plainly: it bands around the body and crosses the head at another angle again, because the head and the body are cut as one. Khara is made in this small size and in a large at 16.5cm tall and 10cm across.
