Description

The Kesu is a square floor pouffe, 70cm on each side and 30cm high, covered in a flat woven kilim of hemp and cotton. The weave is coarse and the thread runs thick and thin across a single face. On a pale sand ground it carries stepped diamonds and zig-zags in black, faded rust and a soft green, all of them washed back so that no one colour comes forward of the rest. A seam runs round the top edge and down each corner, and the top is filled flat rather than domed.

At 30cm it sits well below seat height. That makes it a footrest in front of an armchair, or low seating pulled up to a coffee table when a room is full. The 70cm square takes both feet side by side with room over. It weighs 15kg, so it stays where it is put rather than moving from room to room, and it sits out in the open floor between a sofa and a low table rather than tucked against anything.

The cover is hemp and cotton woven together, and the surface feels of the cotton rather than the coarser hemp under it. The washed finish takes the colours down, so nothing in the pattern reads bright. It is made to be carried out to a table in the garden for an afternoon but not to live outdoors, and left out in the weather it will deteriorate. The Kesu range also holds a 125cm bench in the same kilim over an iron frame.
