Description

A wide ceramic bowl, 38.5cm across and 13.5cm deep, with a rim that rises and falls in a slow scallop rather than running level. The whole outside is combed in close vertical lines cut into the clay from the foot up to the rim, while the inside is left plain. The glaze is matt and close to off-white, and it thins over the raised lines so the clay reads paler along each one. The bowl sits on a small foot ring.

At 38.5cm across this is a centrepiece rather than something to serve from. It fills the middle of a coffee table or holds a sideboard on its own. It is for display only and is not suitable for use with food. At 2.7kg there is enough weight in it to stay where it is put once it is down.

The bowl is made by hand in Portugal, where the whole piece depends on the potter at every stage, and the combing is cut one line at a time. That means the spacing of the lines and the rise and fall of the rim come out differently on every bowl, and the matt glaze sits deeper where it pools and thinner where it runs. This is a single bowl.

Frequently Asked

Can I serve food in it?

No. It is a decorative piece and is not suitable for use with food.

How big is it?

38.5cm across and 13.5cm deep.

Where is it made?

Portugal, by hand.

Will every bowl look the same?

Closely, but not exactly. The combing and the scallop of the rim are cut by hand and the glaze settles at different depths, so every bowl differs a little.

How do I look after it?

A soft dry cloth over it regularly is all it wants. Do not wash it with water or soap.
