Description

A square woven panel 75cm by 75cm, set into a mango wood frame 8cm deep. The ground is a coarse natural fibre in an oatmeal tone and the pattern is worked into it in near black: a diamond at the centre with chevron arms running out to either side, a band of arrowheads above and below it, and a block of short vertical dashes in each corner. The dark yarn stands up off the ground, so the design reads as weaving rather than as print. The panel sits back inside the frame rather than flush with its face.

At 75cm square it holds a wall on its own without needing a group around it. Centred above a bed it hangs high enough to clear the pillows, the frame reading as a thin pale line against a plain wall. A stair wall, the space above a sofa or the wall behind a bedhead all take a square of this size. The pattern is symmetrical about both axes, so it hangs the same way up whichever edge goes to the top.

Jute is a rain-fed crop that needs little fertiliser or pesticide, and it spins into a strong and durable thread.
