Description

This is a candle holder in the shape of a snowflake, made from 100% aluminium with a silver plated finish. Its arms spread out from the centre, each one shaped like a little sprig of leaves, and a ring of small round openings circles the single round cup that holds one slim taper candle. It is 13.5cm across and just 4cm tall, so it sits low and wide, a flat star of metal rather than a tall stem. At 0.1KG it is light, as aluminium is, and easy to move from room to room wherever you want a candle.

We think of it as a Christmas piece first. Set it in the middle of the dinner table, along a mantelpiece, on a deep windowsill or on a hall console where guests come in, and its outline shows best from above, which is how most of us see a table. It works on its own on a sideboard or a side table, and a few of them in a line down a long table look like snow that has just settled. It suits anyone who decorates simply for December and wants a winter shape without a lot of fuss, and it is an easy gift to bring to a host.

The finish is plated, and the surface is textured rather than mirror smooth: the leaves carry a fine stippled grain and the cup shows faint lines, so the silver catches candlelight unevenly, a little like frost on a window. For the look we like best, choose a tall, slim taper, so that the height comes from the candle and the low silver snowflake spreads out beneath it on marble, pale wood or a linen runner.
