Description

A shallow bowl carved from a single piece of reclaimed wood, round in the well with a raised rim and a stepped lug standing out at each end. It measures 48cm from lug to lug, 38cm across and 6cm deep. The tool marks are left in: chisel scoring runs round the outer edge of the rim, the grain figures darker through the base, and a long split can run down one side.

At 48 by 38cm the bowl takes up most of the centre of a coffee table. At 6cm the well is shallow, so it holds fruit, a candle or a few objects laid flat rather than anything that needs sides.

The wood is reclaimed, bought from local markets in India and then hand-carved and restored, so each bowl carries the marks of whatever it was before. Sizes vary by up to 10cm from the measurements above, and the grain, the splits and the depth of tone differ from one bowl to the next. This is the only size the Karua bowl is made in.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

48cm from lug to lug, 38cm across and 6cm deep. Because the wood is reclaimed, sizes vary by up to 10cm.

Is every bowl different?

Yes. Each one is carved by hand from reclaimed wood, so the shape, the grain and the marks left in the surface are one of a kind.

Can I put food in it?

It is listed as food safe. Handle it with care, as the wood is old and carries splits and tool marks from its earlier life.

How do I look after it?

Use a dry, soft cloth to wipe away any dust that builds up, handle it with care, and keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners away from the surface. It is for indoor use only.

Will every bowl look the same?

Not exactly. The bowls are reclaimed and each is carved by hand, so no two are alike in shape, size or grain.
