Description
The Kanz is a tallboy chest of drawers in solid mango wood, 140cm high, 65cm wide and 40cm deep. Six drawers run the full width of the carcass, stacked one above another, and each front is a panel of handwoven cane set into a wood frame with a single round knob at its centre. The carcass stands clear of the floor on four square legs, and the timber is left close to its own pale tone, so the grain reads as figure rather than as colour.
At 140cm high and only 40cm deep it puts six drawers against a stretch of wall too narrow for a wide chest, which suits a bedroom corner, a landing or a hallway. The top stands at roughly chest height: high enough for a lamp and the small things that collect by a door, and too high to sit at. Each drawer runs the full 65cm width, so a folded jumper lies flat across one without being turned.
The wood is mango, cut only once the trees have stopped bearing fruit, which is what puts it into use as timber at all. Each chest is assembled and finished by hand and the grain differs from one to the next, and the cane fronts are woven by hand onto every drawer. The chest weighs 45kg.

Frequently Asked
How many drawers are there?
Six, each running the full 65cm width of the chest.
How tall is it?
140cm high, 65cm wide and 40cm deep.
What are the drawer fronts made from?
Handwoven cane, set into a mango wood frame with a round knob at the centre of each.
Is it solid wood?
The frame and carcass are solid mango. The drawer fronts are cane.
How should I look after it?
Wipe it regularly with a soft dry cloth, always along the grain. Mild soap and water can be used, but not much water. Deal with spills at once, keep harsh chemicals and abrasive materials away, and use mats under anything wet. Strong sunlight fades the finish, and large swings in heat or humidity can crack the wood.
