Kanz Mango Wood & Cane Bedside Table - Natural

A bedside table 55cm wide, 35cm deep and 60cm high, in mango wood. The upper half is an open recess set back from the frame and running the full width; below it a single drawer carries a panel of handwoven cane let into the front, with a small round knob at its centre. The legs are square and taper a little towards the floor, the sides are panelled, and the wood is left pale with the grain showing through.

It stands 60cm high, so the top sits a little above the level of most mattresses, with room for a lamp and a glass. The open shelf under it takes the books being read now, where they can be seen without opening anything, and the drawer takes what should not be on show. At 55cm wide it is a broad bedside table rather than a narrow one.

The carcass is mango wood and the drawer front carries a panel of woven cane. Mango is grown for its fruit and only cut once the tree stops bearing, so the timber comes out of the fruit farming. The grain is left visible rather than covered over, and it runs differently on every table. It weighs 12.5kg. The Kanz range also holds a chest of drawers, a tall boy, a writing desk and a wardrobe in the same wood.

How do I look after it?

Wash mango wood in warm soapy water, then rinse and dry it straight away. It is a tropical timber and prefers humid air, so in a centrally heated house it can dry out and then crack or warp. An edible oil such as olive or walnut rubbed into the surface with a soft cloth will feed it, though it will darken the tone, and it sits on the wood rather than soaking in, so it needs doing again after washing.
