The Kando M/40 is a table lamp shaped like a small lantern: a cylindrical shade of upright sand-coloured strands sits inside a three-post frame of teak wood, capped with a dark brown disc and braced by brown cross pieces at the top and the base. It stands 40cm tall and 22.5cm across, a compact size for a side table, a shelf or a bedside. The light comes from an integrated LED, so there is no bulb to buy or change, and it gives 167 lumens: a soft, low glow that filters through the gaps in the shade rather than a bright reading light. It is made from aluminium, teak wood, ribbon and polycarbonate, with a brown structure and a sand shade.

We would put the Kando M/40 in a living room or a bedroom, where a gentle light matters more than a bright one. On a side table beside a sofa it gives an evening corner a calm glow, and on a bedside table it is soft enough to leave on while you wind down.
