Description

Three baubles in metal, each 19cm from the hanging ring down to the foot and 10cm across. The body is a sphere darkened almost to black, with an oily bloom of blue and brown over it and a broken band of brass running round the middle where the two halves meet. A spray of pointed brass leaves rises from the top on a short stem, and a small brass star sits under the base. Each hangs from a red velvet ribbon.

Nineteen centimetres from ring to foot is long for a bauble and the mass is all in the sphere, so it hangs plumb and stays still. That wants a branch that can carry it, or a single hook where the leaf spray above and the star below both read. Dark metal against a green tree shows as an outline rather than as a highlight, and it is the brass that catches the light.

Each bauble is shaped from metal and assembled by hand in stages, with the leaves and the base added last, then treated and finished in black and brushed brass. Because the black is worked into the metal rather than laid on as a coat of colour, the bloom across it falls differently on every one.
