Description

The Jatani is a lampshade knitted from wire. Fine brass toned wire is worked into a mesh of interlocking loops, a row at a time, and formed into a bell that narrows to a small opening at the top and flares to a heavier hooped rim at the foot. The knitting is not perfectly regular: the rows ridge and gather where the mesh was worked tighter, so the surface has horizontal banding running round it. It stands 35cm tall and 31cm across.

Wire mesh does almost nothing to the light passing through it, so the bulb stays plainly visible and the shade reads as a gold cage around it rather than as a screen. What it does instead is throw a fine pattern of its own onto the ceiling and the nearest wall, which needs a surface close enough to catch it. That makes it a shade for a low drop over a table or an island rather than a high ceiling in an open room. It is made for ceiling use only and will not sit on a lamp base. It weighs 0.88kg.

The wire is iron finished in antique brass. Each shade is knitted and shaped by hand, so the ridging and the exact profile differ from one to the next. No fitting, flex or bulb is included.

Frequently Asked

Will it hide the bulb?

No. The mesh is open, so the bulb is visible through it and is part of what you see. A bulb with a neat filament suits it; a bare high output one will be uncomfortable to look at.

Can it go on a table lamp?

No. It is made for ceiling use only and has no fitting for a lamp base.

Does it come with a flex?

No, the shade alone. You will need a pendant set.

Why is the mesh uneven?

It is knitted by hand a row at a time, so the rows gather and ridge where the mesh was worked tighter. That banding is the surface of the shade rather than a flaw in it.

How do I care for it?

A soft dry cloth or a soft brush, worked gently so the mesh is not pulled out of shape. Keep abrasives and harsh chemicals off the brass finish.
