Description

Three open wire spheres, each 8cm across and 10cm tall overall, built from fine wire bands that run pole to pole and cross at the top and the bottom. Small glass beads are threaded along the wires and spaced out around each band, in red, blue, green, amber, white and orange, so the colour sits as scattered points rather than as a field. There is no shell. The bauble is a cage, and whatever is behind it shows straight through.

A cage bauble does a different job from a solid one. Hung in front of a light it shows the beads as separate points instead of reflecting as one surface. The beads read at close range and the wire outline reads at a distance, so these belong at the front of a tree rather than deep inside it. The mix of colours sits alongside any other colourway rather than needing a set to match.

Each bauble is shaped from fine wire and the glass beads are threaded on and secured one at a time by hand, so no two carry their colours in the same order and the spacing along each band varies. A hanging loop is worked into the top rather than fitted as a separate cap. The wire is the structure and the beads are the whole of the decoration: nothing is moulded and nothing is painted.
