Description

This is a set of four stoneware bowls, each 12cm across and 7.5cm tall, glazed in cream with brushed streaks of darker glaze running down from the rim. The shape is what we like most: a full, rounded belly that curves in towards the lip and sits on a short foot, where the glaze stops and leaves the bare clay showing. Each bowl holds 400ml, more than the compact width suggests, because the depth does the work. Stoneware is a dense, hard-wearing clay body, and these bowls are made of nothing else.

At 400ml, these are a good size for soup, porridge, cereal or noodles, and just as handy for a side of rice, a salad or a pudding. They are made for food and can go in the microwave and the oven, so leftovers can be warmed in the bowl from which they will be eaten, and a small crumble can bake and come straight to the table in its own dish. With four in the set, there is one for each place at a table for four, whether for a weekday breakfast or a weekend supper with friends. Between meals, they sit as comfortably on an open kitchen shelf as in a cupboard.

The finish is a flowing glaze, and as the maker notes, colour variations may occur due to the nature of the glaze, so each bowl may differ slightly from the next. Inside, the glazed well has a fine ring at its centre and small speckles. Care is simple: all four go in the dishwasher.
