Description

The Inkollu cutlery holder is a rectangular basket 28.5cm wide, 23cm deep and 16cm tall, built from closely set iron wire worked into a fine mesh. A wire divider runs the length of the basket, and cross pieces on one side of it make a row of smaller squared compartments while the other side is left as one long open section. A wire handle is pivoted on a boss at the middle of each long side, and a length of mango wood is threaded onto it where the hand takes the weight.

The compartments keep knives, forks and spoons apart rather than tipped in together, and the long section takes serving pieces too big for a small one. The handle swings down against the side, so the basket can be loaded from above with the handle out of the way and then carried in one hand. At 28.5cm wide it goes from a kitchen out to a table in one trip, which is what it is made for. One compartment takes wooden handled cutlery, another brass servers and a third a folded linen.

The wire is iron, bent into shape by hand, with an aged brass finish over it. The grip is mango wood, a by-product of the mango growing industry in India, turned smooth and left in its natural colour. It is not food safe, so cutlery and serving pieces go into it and food does not. It is part of the Inkollu kitchen range, which also runs to a toast rack, a dish rack and a spice rack in the same wire.
