Ilcoso Recycled Hammered Glass Soap Dish - Amber

The Ilcoso is a soap dish in recycled glass, an oblong 14cm long and 8cm across with rounded ends and a shallow well. The wall is thick and heavy and the rim is left uneven, following a soft wave rather than a flat line. The amber runs from a clear fiery orange where light passes through the thin floor of the well to something close to black where the wall doubles at the ends, with darker streaks marbled through it. The hammering shows as soft undulations across the outside rather than as sharp facets.

At 14 by 8cm the dish takes a standard bar with room around it, and at 2cm high it stands barely above the surface it is on. A basin surround, the edge of a bath or the side of a kitchen sink all take it, and the weight of the glass holds it where it is put.

The glass is recycled: it is collected as waste, washed to take out impurities, then crushed, melted and moulded to shape before traditional tools are used to work the surface. That last stage is what leaves the rim uneven and the wall undulating, and it falls differently on every dish. The Ilcoso range runs in amber, green and clear, and holds a dispenser and a storage pot alongside the dish.

What size is it?

14cm long, 8cm across and 2cm high.

What is it made from?

Recycled glass.

How is the glass recycled?

Waste glass is collected and washed to take out impurities, then crushed and melted down before being moulded to shape.

Will every one look the same?

Closely, but not exactly. Each one is hammered by hand, so the wave in the rim and the undulations in the wall fall differently every time.

How do I look after it?

Wash it with a mild detergent and do not leave it to soak. Handle it with care.
