Description

A rail of six hooks, 60cm long, made from an iron bar that tapers towards its middle and finishes in a rounded plate at each end, every plate drilled twice for screws. Each hook is a single curl of iron closed over the bar in a collar, and the six are spaced evenly along it. Bar and hooks together stand 10cm from top to bottom. The antique brass finish runs unevenly along the length, brighter on the raised faces and darker in the hollows.

Fixed through both end plates, the rail carries 4.5cm clear of the wall, which is enough for a hook to take the handle of a pan or a folded towel without either pressing against the plaster. Above a worktop it carries chopping boards and an apron at once, which is what 60cm of bar with six hooks holds. The same rail does the same work in a hallway, a bathroom or a utility room.

The bar and the hooks are iron under an antique brass finish, worked and finished by hand, so the taper of the bar and the depth of that finish are not the same on any two. The hooks are open curls rather than closed rings, so anything hung on them comes away with one hand and nothing needs unfastening. The rail itself weighs 0.61kg; it is what hangs from it that the fixings have to carry, and there are four screw holes to spread that load.
