Description

The Ika is a hurricane lantern 16cm tall and 13cm across: a clear recycled glass bowl that bellies out above the base, draws in near the top and flares again at the rim, seated on a turned mango wood base. The base is a broad low disc with a rounded lip and a flared foot, and around its side the grain stands up in fine close ridges that take the light in lines. The glass sits down into a recess cut in the top of it.

The bowl is open at the top and 13cm across, which takes a pillar candle with room around it, and the glass stands up around the flame on every side. At 16cm the lantern sits on a dining table, a mantelpiece or a windowsill without getting in the way of anything. Indoor use only.

The glass is recycled. Discarded glass is collected, cleaned and melted before it is blown by hand. The base is mango wood, finished by a controlled burning process that brings up the grain and the texture of the timber. Ika is made in this small size and in a large at 21cm tall and 19.5cm across. The candle is not included.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

16cm tall and 13cm across. There is a large one at 21cm tall and 19.5cm across.

Does a candle come with it?

No. It takes a pillar candle, which is not included.

Can it be used outdoors?

Indoor use only.

Is the glass recycled?

Yes. Discarded glass is collected, cleaned and melted down before it is blown by hand.

How do I look after it?

Wipe it regularly with a soft, dry cloth, and use a microfibre cloth in a circular motion on the glass. Warm water with a mild dish soap will take off excess wax. Dry it immediately and do not leave it to soak.

Does it get hot in use?

Yes. Position the candle securely, make sure the flame is not directed at the glass, keep it out of reach of children, wait until it has fully cooled before handling it, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
