Description

A wall shelf 80cm long and 22cm deep, made from a single thick board of reclaimed wood on two flat iron brackets. Each bracket is one strap of metal: it runs up the wall behind the board, turns under it, then turns up again at the front to cradle the leading edge. The iron is a dark brown, close to black. The board is weathered a pale grey brown, with knots, splits and old tool marks still in the grain and an edge that wanders rather than running straight.

At 80cm it takes a run of jars, a few boards and a bowl or two, and a second shelf of the same kind mounts above it. A kitchen wall, a utility room or the space above a worktop all suit it, and at 22cm from the wall it is deep enough for a storage jar. The upturned front of each bracket holds the board in place rather than running as a lip along its length.

The board is reclaimed wood and the brackets are iron. The wood spent a former life as panelling on the outside of an Indian truck and has been re-purposed, which is where the weathering comes from: the tone, the rough patches, the knots and the splits all vary from shelf to shelf. It is made in two lengths, 80cm and 120cm, and this is the shorter. Indoor use only.

Frequently Asked

How long is it?

80cm long, and it stands 22cm out from the wall.

What is the wood?

Reclaimed wood that was once panelling on the outside of an Indian truck.

Will every shelf look the same?

No. The weathering, the knots and the splits differ from shelf to shelf, and that variation is the piece.

Is there a longer one?

Yes. It is made in two lengths, 80cm and 120cm.

How do I look after it?

Wipe it regularly with a soft dry cloth to lift dust and moisture, always working with the grain, and take extra care over the rougher patches, which can splinter. Mild soap and water can be used, but not too much water. Avoid putting wet items straight onto it, use coasters and mats, and blot any spill immediately. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive materials away from it.
