Description

A shallow round pasta bowl, 23cm across and 5cm deep, with a broad flat rim and a well that drops away from it in a single curve. The rim is painted with fine indigo lines set close together and running out from the well to the edge, each one drawn separately, so the spacing opens and closes slightly round the circle. The well itself and the underside are left plain white.

At 23cm across and only 5cm deep this is a wide shallow bowl rather than a deep one, so it takes pasta or a risotto spread across the width rather than a stew that needs depth. The rim is broad enough to take a thumb without reaching into the food, and the lines stop where the well begins, so nothing is painted where a fork will run. It stacks with the dinner and side plates from the same range, the rims lining up through the stack.

The bowl is ceramic, handmade from white clay and painted by hand in Vietnam, so the line work differs from bowl to bowl and no two rims carry exactly the same spacing. Iba runs to a dinner plate, a side plate, a cereal bowl, two sizes of serving bowl, a jug, a butter dish and mugs, all carrying the same indigo lines, and there is a twelve-piece set.

Is it dishwasher safe?

Yes.

Is it safe for food?

Yes.

Will every bowl carry the same pattern?

Not exactly. The lines are painted by hand, so the spacing and the length of each one vary from bowl to bowl.

How should it be washed?

Wash it after every use to stop staining, with a mild detergent, and do not leave it to soak. Handle it with care to prevent chipping.
