Description
These two little stoneware houses are a pair of salt and pepper shakers, each one shaped like a toy shop with a pitched tiled roof, a small sign reading TOYS, a small door, shuttered windows and a little railing painted across the front. The roof tiles and the framing are embossed, so the pattern stands slightly proud of the surface, and the shaker holes sit on top of the roof. Each house is 6cm long, 5cm wide and 6cm tall, small enough to sit beside a plate without crowding it. The body is 99% stoneware with 1% silicone, and the finish is painted by hand, so the pair is multicoloured and each house is painted differently from the other.
They are made for holding salt and pepper, so they belong on the kitchen or dining table at everyday meals, from a quick breakfast to a long Sunday lunch, and they bring a little charm to a festive table in winter. Because they are so compact, they also sit happily on a dresser or an open shelf between meals, among cups and plates. They make a cheerful gift for someone setting up a first home, or for anyone who loves small houses on the shelf.
The shakers are not for the dishwasher, the microwave or the oven, so wash them by hand in warm soapy water and let them dry completely before filling them again, since salt clumps when it meets damp. Washing by hand also looks after the painted detail on the roofs and walls. To style them, stand the pair on a small saucer or tray at the centre of the table so they travel together, and set them beside plain plates, where their multicoloured roofs and little shop signs have room to show.
