Description

This is a small stoneware plate, painted by hand, with a bird in flight at its centre. The bird flies across a fine ground of trailing leaves and little flowers in blue, and a deep blue rim circles the whole plate, carrying a ring of small birds, open blossoms and leafy branches. It measures 16cm across and 2cm tall, which makes it a side plate rather than a dinner plate: the size you reach for with toast, a slice of cake or a starter. Stoneware is dense and hard-wearing, and at 0.22KG this one is light and easy to pass round the table.

It earns its place at breakfast, beside a boiled egg or a croissant, and at teatime with biscuits or a scone. At dinner it works as a bread plate to the left of each setting, or holds olives and nibbles when friends visit.
