Description

These small stoneware espresso cups come as a set of two, each hand decorated with a bird that stretches across the body and becomes the handle. On one cup the bird's wing reaches out from the side to form the handle; on the other the bird's head and neck curve round in a loop to give you something to hold. Sprigs of leaves rise around each bird, and the pair together is cheerfully multicoloured. Each cup is 5cm across and 5cm tall and holds 55ml, which makes it a true espresso cup rather than a coffee cup or a mug, just right for a short, strong coffee.

Set them out after supper for an espresso with friends, or keep them beside the coffee machine in the kitchen for your morning shot. With two different birds, they make a natural pair for a couple and a thoughtful gift for anyone who takes their coffee short. Their small size sits happily on a tray at the end of a dinner party, and on a dining table laid with patterned plates they add a playful note without crowding the place settings. Between uses, they look charming on an open kitchen shelf.

The cups are made from 100% stoneware, a dense ceramic that feels solid in the hand, and stoneware holds heat well. Each bird and sprig is decorated by hand. Looking after them is easy: they can go in the dishwasher, in the microwave and in the oven, so you can wash them with everything else and warm them before pouring a fresh espresso. When they are not in use, rest one inside the other on a shelf, or set each on a plain saucer so the birds catch the eye.
