Description

The Hasa is a storage bench 120cm long: a thick, rough-sawn mango wood plank set as a seat on an iron frame. Below the seat the frame is divided into eight compartments, four along an upper tier and four along a lower one, each backed and floored with square wire mesh. The iron is dark and the mesh is open at the front, so the compartments can be seen into from the side as well as head on. The frame stands on four short round feet.

It stands 46cm to the top of the seat and is only 30cm deep, so it sits close against a wall and still takes a row of shoes. In a hallway the lower bays take baskets and the upper ones shoes. Each tier is divided into four across the 120cm length. At 29.3kg the bench is heavy enough to stay where it is put rather than shift when somebody sits down to pull boots off.

The frame is iron and the mesh is welded square wire. The seat is a single plank of mango wood, left natural rather than varnished, so the grain, the saw marks and the tone belong to the wood itself and the colour will shift over time. The Hasa is made in this one size.
