Description

A counter-height chair with a curved leather back and seat on a slim black iron frame. The back is upholstered in buffalo leather and run through with vertical ribbed channels from the seat up to the top edge, where it curves round into a low wing on each side. The seat is plain leather, dished a little and set wider than the back. The frame is four splayed iron rods with a rail running round near the floor and a flat plate at the front for the feet.

The seat sits at 70cm, which is counter height rather than bar height, so it goes under a kitchen island or a raised dining table rather than under a full-height bar. The chair stands 104cm to the top of the back and is 45cm wide and 52cm front to back, so the back shows above a counter when the chair is pushed in. At an island the footplate turns to the front, which is where the feet go once the chair is drawn up.

The leather is buffalo hide, a by-product of farming rather than its purpose. The herds are kept by local herdsmen, so the hide is used rather than wasted and the herdsmen take a second income from it, and each chair is upholstered by hand. The brown runs chestnut across the flat of the seat and darkens into the ribbed channels and the creases, so the back reads deeper than the seat. The iron frame is left black.

How do I look after the leather?

Wipe it down gently with a soft dry or microfibre cloth at least once a week, as dust and dirt settle in the pores and shorten its life. Deal with spills at once using a dry cloth, or a slightly damp one for anything sticky, and do not scrub. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat, both of which cause fading, drying and cracking, and never use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. A leather conditioner will prolong the look, tested first somewhere out of sight.
