Description

The Haadu is a large oval drum covered in kilim, a flat woven textile with no pile, made in wool over a jute warp. It is 45cm tall, 45cm across the broad way and 30cm the narrow way, which makes it the deepest shade in this set as well as one of the widest. The pattern is worked in deep rust and undyed cream, the colours meeting in square edged terraces, and the jute warp shows through as a fine grid across the whole surface.

Each shade is cut from a length of woven kilim, so the pattern that lands on it depends on where the cut fell. The motifs differ from one shade to the next, and that is the range rather than an error: the colours and the character hold, the arrangement does not. At this scale the pattern is the entire object, so it wants a substantial base and a position where it is seen from a few feet away. The oval plan means it presents a broad face one way and a narrow one the other, which suits a lamp standing against a wall. It weighs 1.1kg.

Kilim is woven by interlacing warp and weft on a flat loom, which is why a diagonal has to be built out of squares and every motif has terraced edges. The Haadu is wool over jute. No bulb, base or fitting is included.
