Description
The Grand Cabin is a round porthole bulkhead light made from solid brass and finished in antique brass, a deep bronze-brown with warmer brass catching the edges and the three lugs around the rim. A grid in the same finish crosses the front in a lattice, framing a clear ribbed glass lens whose fine ridges radiate out from the centre. It is 24cm across and 10cm deep, a generous size that holds its own on the front of a house. It is rated IP64, which means it is dust-tight and protected from splashing water from any direction, so it lives outdoors in British weather all year round.
The maker describes it as a classic porthole bulkhead for the front of a building or for lighting the way along a passageway at an inn, and we would add a porch, a back door, a garden wall or the side of a boathouse. The maker says its bulkheads are designed for outdoor places that call for an industrial or nautical effect, and that maritime influence shows in the materials, designs and names of its range. It looks as much at home on a coastal cottage or a converted warehouse as beside the door of a plain brick house that could do with some character.
Solid brass darkens and mellows outdoors, and the maker describes this finish as aged and original-looking, so it settles into its surroundings. The cable enters through a gland at the end or the rear, and a brass blank is included to replace the gland where it is not needed. It takes one E27 (ES) lamp of up to 18W, and the lamp is not included, so have a bulb ready before it is fitted. As a mains light it should be installed by a qualified electrician. Fit a warm white bulb and the ribbed glass glows softly behind the grid after dark.

Frequently Asked
Can the Grand Cabin bulkhead light be used outdoors?
Yes. It is rated IP64, so it is dust-tight and protected from splashing water from any direction, which suits a wall exposed to British weather all year.
What bulb does this bulkhead light take?
It takes one E27 (ES) lamp with a maximum of 18W. The lamp is not included, so you will need to buy one separately.
How big is the Grand Cabin bulkhead?
It is 24cm across and 10cm deep, and it weighs 1.86KG, so it makes a generous round light for a front wall or a porch.
Will the antique brass finish change over time?
Solid brass darkens and mellows outdoors. The maker describes this finish as aged and original-looking, so weathering simply deepens the character it already has.
Where does the cable enter the light?
The cable enters through a gland at the end or the rear, and a brass blank is included to replace the gland where it is not needed.
Why does the light have a grid over the glass?
The maker describes the grid cover as extra protection for the clear ribbed glass, and it gives the light its classic porthole look.
