Description

This small ceramic Christmas jar takes the shape of a gingerbread house, made in brown dolomite with a lift-off roof for a lid and a pinewood spoon whose handle rests in a notch in the roof. The walls carry raised arched windows, a little door at one end and swirls of piped icing detail, while the roof is laid with scalloped icing lines and dots and finished with a chimney. It holds 349ml, which makes it a jar for small amounts rather than bulk storage, and it stands 11.5cm long, 9.5cm wide and 12cm tall, weighing 0.536KG.

It is approved for food, so it can sit on the breakfast table or a tea tray with sugar, spices or sweets inside, and the spoon lets everyone help themselves straight from the jar. Through the festive weeks it suits the kitchen counter, the dining table at a Christmas brunch or an open shelf where the house front faces the room, and its small footprint leaves space for a teapot or a cake stand beside it. It also makes an easy present for someone who loves Christmas baking, given empty or filled with a favourite treat.

Dolomite is a type of ceramic, and here it has a glossy finish that catches the light on every line of the raised icing. The jar is not for the dishwasher, the microwave or the oven, so keep it out of all three, and the little spoon is pinewood with a smooth, rounded bowl. For a seasonal display, set it at the end of a table runner with candles and a sprig of greenery, or stand it on a kitchen shelf beside plain wooden boards so the gingerbread detail has room to be noticed.
