Description

This is a pair of multicoloured candle holders in handpainted stoneware, each one shaped as a flower: a scalloped petal cup on a flared stem, with a leaf standing out on either side. The taller holder has painted stripes running down its stem and fine veins traced across its leaves. The shorter one is stockier, its stem covered in dots and its petals striped. The taller stands 15cm tall, 12.5cm long and 8cm wide, and the shorter 11cm tall, 11.5cm long and 8cm wide. Each petal cup takes a taper candle or a tealight, so you can choose a tall flame or a low glow from the same piece.

Because they differ in height, the two look best together, placed a little apart on a dining table, a side table or a mantelpiece, where the step from one to the other gives a small group some rhythm. They suit a home that enjoys colour and a little playfulness, and they bring a cheerful note to a birthday table or a long evening with friends. Unlit, they still hold their own as a pair of small painted flowers on a bookshelf or a desk. They also make a thoughtful gift for someone whose candlesticks are all plain.

Both pieces are 100% stoneware, a clay fired hard and dense, and both are painted by hand. The brushwork shows in the petals and in the veins of the leaves, and because no two hands paint quite alike, small differences from one pair to the next are part of the appeal.
