This cream stoneware plate is finished in a reactive glaze that gathers into fine speckles across the centre and opens into a ring of soft, petal-like marks around the rim, with the glaze breaking darker at the very edge. At 17cm across and 2.5cm tall it is a side plate size: right for toast, a slice of cake, a pastry or a small starter rather than a main meal. The rim rises gently from the base, giving it a shallow, dish-like profile that holds 100ml, so a little dressing, butter or fruit juice stays on the plate. Stoneware is a dense, hard-wearing ceramic, and this plate weighs 0.4KG.

Set it beside a dinner plate for bread at supper, reach for it at breakfast with toast or a croissant, or bring it out with the teapot for biscuits and cake.
