Description

This small rectangular stoneware plate measures 15cm long, 11.5cm wide and 2cm tall, and carries a bold yellow leaf motif painted by hand. Broad, rounded fronds fan out across almost the whole surface, leaving only a narrow plain border at the edge. From the side, the rim lifts gently and the plate sits on a slightly narrower base, so it behaves more like a shallow tray than a flat plate. Stoneware is a dense, hard-fired clay that copes well with daily use, and at 0.264KG this one is light and easy to pass around the table.

At this size it is a side plate rather than a dinner plate, and it earns its place at every meal: a slice of cake or a couple of biscuits with afternoon tea, butter on the breakfast table, or olives and a little cheese when friends visit. In the kitchen it makes a handy spoon rest beside the hob or a home for a used tea bag. Away from the table it is just as useful on a dressing table, where it keeps rings and earrings together, or on a hall shelf as a catch-all for keys.
