Description

This is a small stoneware plate, 15cm long, 11.5cm wide and 2cm tall, with a cream ground painted by hand with a loose pattern of leaves on curling vines. It is rectangular with softly rounded corners and a low, gently raised rim, and underneath, the base steps in to a narrower foot, so the plate seems to sit just clear of the table. At that size it is a side plate rather than a dinner plate: big enough for a slice of cake, a pastry or a couple of biscuits, and small enough to tuck beside a teacup. Stoneware is a dense, hard-wearing clay, and at 0.3KG this one is easy to pass round the table.

We would put it to work at the edges of a meal: butter and toast at breakfast, olives or a wedge of cheese when friends visit, a biscuit beside the afternoon tea, a scone at a weekend brunch. It sits well on a kitchen dresser or an open shelf, where the painted leaves stay on show between meals, and it makes a thoughtful small gift for anyone who likes tableware that looks made by hand.
