B22 (BC) LED GLS Bulb 4.9W 470lm Non-Dimmable - Cool White 4000K

A GLS bulb is the classic pear shape that most ceiling pendants, table lamps and shades in British homes were built around, and this one carries a B22 bayonet cap. B22 is the push and twist fitting, two small pins on the side of the metal base rather than a screw thread, so check the old bulb before you order: if it pushed up and turned a quarter turn to lock, this is the right cap. It draws 4.9W to give 470 lumens, which the retail pack rates as the equal of a 40W conventional bulb.

The light is 4000K, the cool white that sits between the yellow of an old incandescent and the blue white of daylight. It reads as clean and neutral rather than cosy, which suits kitchens, utility rooms, hallways, landings, home offices and garages, anywhere you want to see clearly rather than settle in for the evening. The opal shell spreads the output rather than showing a hard point of light, and the beam angle is 220 degrees, so it throws sideways and a little backwards as well as down. The pack also prints a colour rendering index above 80.

It is not dimmable, so give it a plain on/off switch rather than a dimmer circuit. The energy label puts it in class F at 5kWh per 1000 hours, and the pack states a lamp life of 10 years or 10,000 hours with more than 10,000 on/off switching cycles, worth knowing on a hallway or stair light that gets flicked all day. How do I know if my lamp takes a B22 cap?

Look at the base of the old bulb. A B22 has a smooth metal cylinder with two small pins on the sides, and it pushes into the holder then turns a quarter turn to lock. A threaded base is a screw fitting and will not take this bulb.

Is 470 lumens bright enough to replace my old bulb?

The pack rates this 4.9W lamp as the equal of a 40W conventional bulb, so it suits a table lamp, a bedside light or a smaller pendant. For a main ceiling light in a large room you may want two fittings or a higher output lamp.

Can I put this on a dimmer switch?

No. The specification states that it is not dimmable, so it should be wired to a standard on/off switch. If your circuit has a dimmer fitted, choose a lamp that states dimmable rather than using this one.

What does 4000K cool white actually look like?

It is a clean, neutral white with none of the yellow cast of an old filament bulb and none of the blue edge of 6500K daylight. It makes worktops, paperwork and laundry easier to read, which is why it works well in kitchens and home offices.

Will it work on a normal UK mains supply?

Yes. It is made for a 220 to 240V supply at 50 or 60Hz, which is the standard domestic supply here, so it goes straight into an existing bayonet holder with no driver or transformer.
