Description

The Essubi is a single wide sheet of raffia, folded rather than formed: one half lies almost flat and the other curls up and over it, so the outline is a leaf shape rather than a circle and the two halves meet along a raised fold down the middle. The strands run out from the centre like the ribs of a palm leaf and are held with small knots tied on the outside, between 125 and 145 of them on each shade. The edge is bound with a raffia cord, and a small brass cap at the top takes a rust coloured braided fabric flex. It measures 71cm one way and 86cm the other, and stands 20cm deep.

The bulb hangs below the shade rather than inside it, so this is a canopy and not a cover. The raffia takes the light on its underside and glows, the fold throws a shadow across itself, and the bulb is in full view from a seat or a bed below. At 86cm at its widest it needs room: over a bed, a long table or a sitting area rather than a hall or a landing. It takes one E27 bulb up to 40W, it is dimmable, the flex runs 1.5m, and it is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms.

The raffia is stripped from palm leaves by hand and woven over a metal frame. Because every shade is folded and knotted by hand, the outline, the depth of the fold and the number of knots differ from one to the next. Bulbs are not included.

Frequently Asked

Does the bulb sit inside the shade?

No. The shade is a canopy above the bulb and the bulb hangs below it in full view, so a bulb worth looking at suits it.

Why is it not round?

It is a folded sheet rather than a cone or a dome, so it measures 71cm across one way and 86cm the other.

How many knots are there?

Between 125 and 145 on each shade, tied by hand and sitting on the outer face where they can be seen.

How do I clean it?

A soft dry cloth or a duster, and a soft brush for dust that has settled into the weave. Do not use water or any liquid cleaner, and keep it out of direct sun and away from damp.
