Description

A glass egg 15cm tall and 12cm across that comes apart at the middle, the pointed top coming away from a squat bowl below. The whole surface is pressed in relief: a dense field of small diamonds over most of it, a band of scrollwork around the seam where the two halves meet, and a finer basketweave over the crown. The glass is clear, so whatever is inside shows through it.

The bottom half is a bowl and the domed top sits back over it, so it holds small things as well as decorating a surface. Closed, what is inside shows through the pressed glass. At 15cm tall and 12cm across it stands on a shelf, a hall table or in the middle of a laid table, and it is the larger of the two sizes it comes in.

The glass is recycled. It is melted and shaped into the curved form, then the ornate pattern is pressed into the surface while it is still hot, so the depth of the relief varies a little from one egg to the next. It is glass throughout, and it weighs 0.465kg.
