The English Bridle is a 502mm outdoor wall lantern housing three E14 bulbs behind clear seeded glass panels, all enclosed in a matt black aluminium frame. The seeded glass carries a subtle bubble texture that softens the light output and creates a warmer glow than clear flat glass. An IP44 rating protects the lamp holders and internal wiring from rain splash, making the lantern suitable for covered porches, under eaves, and sheltered patios.

Designed for residential front doors, garage entrances and garden gate pillars, the lantern projects 267mm from the wall and sits 216mm wide, providing adequate illumination across a 2-3m entrance width when paired with a second lantern on the opposite side. The decorative scroll arm at the top of the backplate and the turned finial detail at the base reference traditional Victorian carriage lanterns, while the matt black finish keeps the aesthetic grounded in contemporary outdoor schemes. The three-bulb configuration gives flexibility to use lower-wattage LEDs while still achieving bright task lighting.

The frame is die-cast aluminium rather than steel, which prevents rust and reduces the need for ongoing maintenance in wet coastal or high-rainfall areas. The matt black powder-coat finish hides minor scratches and weathering better than polished or glossy alternatives. Each glass panel sits within a metal cage structure with decorative fretwork running along the top rim, adding visual detail without obstructing light output. The backplate mounts to standard UK masonry fixings and the wiring connects to a standard outdoor-rated junction box behind the wall.

What bulbs does it take and are they included?

The lantern takes three E14 small Edison screw bulbs, each up to 60W maximum. Bulbs are not included. Most users fit 4-6W LED candle bulbs in warm white 2700K for adequate porch lighting without excessive energy draw.

Can it be used in exposed positions or only under cover?

The IP44 rating protects against rain splash from any direction, but not submersion or high-pressure water jets. The lantern suits covered porches, under eaves, and sheltered patios. For fully exposed positions on coastal properties or open garden walls, an IP65-rated fitting would be more appropriate.

How is the seeded glass cleaned?

The glass panels can be wiped with a damp microfibre cloth and mild soapy water. The seeded texture traps some dust and debris in the bubbles, so a soft brush can help dislodge particles before wiping. Avoid abrasive cleaners that might scratch the glass or damage the powder-coat finish on the frame.

Is the black finish matt or gloss?

The finish is a low-sheen matt black powder-coat. This hides minor scratches and weathering better than a high-gloss finish and does not show fingerprints during installation.
