Description

This is a 9W LED replacement for the four pin GX24q compact fluorescent lamp, the short twin tube type usually called PLT or PL-T. Two slim LED tubes rise from a square white base, with the four flat pins set in a keyed block underneath. It gives 1260 lumens at 4000K, a cool white that reads as a clean neutral rather than a yellow, and the pack rates it against a 26W fluorescent lamp.

Four pin GX24q caps are found in recessed downlights, enclosed ceiling fittings and bulkheads, the sort used in hallways, stairwells, offices, workshops and kitchens where the light is left on for long stretches. Cool white suits those working areas: it keeps worktops, paperwork and stair treads clearly lit, and white walls read as white rather than cream. Before you order, check the cap on the lamp you are taking out. GX24q has four pins in its block; the two pin version is GX24d, and the two are not interchangeable.

There is no dimming: the pack marks it non dimmable, so run it from a plain switch. The pack also carries a wiring instruction worth reading first. The lamp is not compatible with an electronic ballast, so the ballast has to be removed and the fitting wired direct to mains, work the pack says must be done by a qualified electrician to BS7671. The pack prints a 30,000 hour lifespan. Each box holds one lamp and the minimum order is 10, in multiples of 10, which suits relamping a run of fittings at once.

Will this fit my existing GX24q socket?

It takes the four pin GX24q cap, so it seats in any fitting holding a four pin PL-T lamp. A two pin GX24d socket is a different cap and will not accept it.

Do I have to remove the ballast first?

Yes. The pack states the lamp is not compatible with an electronic ballast, so the ballast must be taken out and the fitting wired direct to mains by a qualified electrician to BS7671.

How bright is 1260 lumens in practice?

The pack rates it as a 26W replacement, so it is aimed at the fluorescent lamp it succeeds rather than at a household bulb. It draws 9W to produce that output.
