G24d LED PLD Bulb 6W 835lm Non-Dimmable - Cool White 4000K

This is a 2 pin G24d LED PLD lamp, the LED version of the twin tube compact fluorescent found in recessed downlights and bulkhead fittings. Two straight tubes rise from a white base, and two flat pins on the underside push into a G24d holder. It draws 6W and gives 835 lumens of 4000K cool white light, and the retail pack rates it as an 18W replacement. The pack also prints a 30 year lifespan and marks the lamp as non dimmable.

4000K sits between the yellow of a 2700K warm white lamp and the blue cast of daylight: a neutral white that keeps paintwork and paper looking their own colour and makes print and edges easy to read. That is why it is the usual pick for offices, stairwells, corridors, garages, workshops, storerooms and retail display. The PLD shape was drawn for compact fittings, so the G24d holder usually turns up inside a flush square downlight, a wall washer or a maintained bulkhead. Before you order, look at the cap on the lamp you are removing: a G24d cap carries two flat pins, while a four pin cap is a G24q and takes a different lamp.

Because the pack marks it non dimmable, keep it on plain switching rather than a dimmer plate. The manufacturer does not state whether the lamp runs on existing control gear or needs the wiring altered, so have an electrician check the fitting before you change over. Each box holds one lamp, and the order minimum is 10, sold in multiples of 10, which works well when you are restocking a maintenance cupboard. Will it fit my existing G24d lamp holder?

A G24d cap carries two flat pins, so it goes into a two pin G24d holder. If the lamp you are taking out has four pins it is a G24q and this one will not suit it.

How much light does 6W actually give?

It gives 835 lumens, and the retail pack rates that as an 18W replacement. That is a general lighting level for a hallway, office, stairwell or compact bulkhead fitting.

What does 4000K cool white look like once it is lit?

A neutral white with none of the yellow of a 2700K lamp and none of the blue edge of 6500K daylight. Whites read as white, which is why workplaces tend to choose it.

Can I put it on a dimmer switch?

No. The retail pack marks the lamp as non dimmable, so it is built for plain on and off switching. Fit it to an ordinary switched circuit rather than a dimmer plate.

Is an IP rating given for this lamp?

The manufacturer does not state an IP rating, so we make no claim about dust or moisture protection. Treat it as an indoor lamp for an ordinary enclosed fitting.

How many bulbs do I get, and is there an order minimum?
