Description
This advent calendar is made like a book you open at the start of December. Closed, it is a white plywood box 20cm long, 10cm wide and 29cm tall, its cover printed with a sleigh and reindeer flying among snowflakes, a stag between two fir trees and the words Merry Christmas, all framed by fine lines and scrolled corners. Open it on its two hinges and it becomes a small winter stage: on one side a layered cut-out scene of deer, snowy firs and a cottage beneath a border of snowflakes, and on the other 24 little drawers numbered 1 to 24. It also has a built-in light, a welcome touch through the short, dark days of Advent.
Each drawer front carries its own small motif, from holly and leafy sprigs to baubles, snowflakes and tiny fir trees, and a finger notch cut into the top makes it easy to pull open. Fill them with small gifts, folded notes, little ornaments or clues for a treasure hunt, one drawer for each day up to Christmas Eve, and the whole household can take turns opening them. It sits well on a sideboard, a console table in the hall or a bookshelf, where its book shape looks at home among real spines.
The whole piece is 100% plywood and weighs 1.572KG, easy to lift from a cupboard each year and set out again when the countdown begins. Plywood is built from thin sheets of wood bonded in layers, which helps flat panels like these hold their shape. Closed, the box keeps the scene and drawers tucked away, so it packs neatly back into storage after Christmas. For styling, stand it open with the scene facing the room and leave a little space either side, as the open calendar spreads wider than the closed box; a few small wrapped parcels beside it finish the look.
