Description

A flat-woven rug, 150 by 240cm and about 1cm thick, made from narrow strips of leather worked across a cotton warp. The strips run the width of the rug in tight ranks, and because every strip carries its own tone the surface moves between tan, rust and a deeper brown along each row. There is no pile: the weave itself is the surface, and the rug lies flat to the floor.

150 by 240cm reaches under the front legs of a three-seat sofa with room left in front of it for a low table. With no pile to flatten, it looks the same from either end of a room rather than changing as somebody walks across it. At 6.2kg it has enough weight to lie flat on a hard floor from the day it is unrolled.

The leather is waste from the clothing industry, gathered and shredded into fine strips before it is woven by hand, and the cotton is what holds the whole thing together. Because the strips come off different hides, every rug carries its own spread of tone, and the variation runs across the whole surface rather than gathering into a pattern.
