Description

A pasta bowl in terracotta stoneware, 21.6cm across and 6.9cm deep. The sides slope gently out from a small flat base to a plain rim, so the bowl is wide and shallow rather than steep. The inside and the rim are glazed a soft cream, and below the rim the outside is left as bare clay in the warm pink-brown of the terracotta body.

The width is what the shape is for. At 21.6cm across it takes a portion of pasta spread out rather than heaped, and it will do the same for a salad, a curry or a stew. Among stacked plates the cream inside picks up the plates and the terracotta outside is the only colour there. At 6.9cm deep it stacks against the other Edo bowls without the rims riding on each other.

The bowl is stoneware made from terracotta clay. Two layers of glaze go over the inside and the rim, mixed so that they react against each other in the kiln, which is why the tone and the surface shift from one bowl to the next. The Edo range also holds a dinner plate, a side plate, a cereal bowl, mugs in two sizes and a twelve-piece dinner set.
