Description

The Dunai is a planter 44cm across and 31.5cm high, with a wide round rim that curves in to a smaller flat base. The wall is thick and the rim rolls over at the top, leaving an opening 38cm across. A reactive glaze runs over the outside in browns that pool dark and glossy in places and dry to a pale, pitted surface in others, with a band of heavier, rougher glaze running down one side and the same glaze carried over the inside of the rim.

This is the largest of the three Dunai sizes. At 44cm across and 38cm at the opening it takes a shrub, a small tree or a full herb planting rather than a single plant, and at 7kg empty it is not something to move once it has soil in it. It has drainage holes and is made for outdoor use, and a stopper comes with it for the holes when it stands indoors. All three sizes group together on a path, standing directly on the ground rather than on feet.

The body is ceramic, moulded into shape by hand in Vietnam, and the reactive glaze is applied before it goes into the kiln. A reactive glaze changes as it fires, so the colour and the texture come out differently on every planter and no two carry the same pattern. The Dunai is made in three sizes.
